“Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

Wow, what can I say? This was one of the best shows I have ever seen in person. Needless to say the artwork was amazing. The time, thought, and effort the participating artists put into the exhibition was pretty impressive. I think the Street Market install from ESPO, Barry McGee, and REAS stole the show for me. I’ll let you look at the artwork on the main Arrested Motion site here, but I think the most cool thing was seeing all these legends at the same place at the same time (like Futura and Saber above).  It was pretty surreal.

I think although there are some gripes about the show and politics behind the whole thing, in the end, they couldn’t fit every single artist in there.  And to be sure, there were a lot of important artists missing, some that we cover on AM like Phil Frost, Vhils, David Choe, Faile, Know Hope, Ericailcane, Doze Green, Dan Witz, Armsrock, Nick Walker, Sam3, Saner, D*Face, Zevs, Blek Le Rat, Mark Jenkins, WK Interact, Titifreak, Mike Giant, Bast, Herbert Baglione, Judith Supine, C215, the list goes on and on.  That said, this was a very very important and impressive show and you definitely don’t want to miss it.  Maybe when it moves to Brooklyn next year, they will invite some different artists that they missed to join it.  We will see.

Oh, on a side note, met an actor from one of my favorite series on TV… pic after the jump…

Audrey Kawasaki Update

It looks like Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) is working on a new body of work that she occasionally posts sneak peeks to with her instagram filter on flickr.  I’m really looking forward to seeing her work in several shows this year in LA with the next being a joint show at Merry Karnowsky (Los Angeles) in July.

Benefit / Releases: KAWS Japan Print

It looks like KAWS has decided to step in and decided to help out with the relief efforts in Japan. Well, not really, but one of our forum members Sal decided to play a April Fool’s joke on everyone. The image was pretty well constructed and fitting though don’t you think?

Chinese Zodiac Show – Travis Louie

This new piece from Travis Louie (featured) for tonight’s Chinese zodiac themed show at myplasticheart brings back some memories. The character is the Monkey King, whose adventures my mother read to me and my sisters as bedtime stories as we were growing up. Other notable pieces include Amy Sol’s water dragon (I’m year of the dragon) and a piece from Roland Tamayo (seen after the jump) who married one of my classmates from graduate school unbeknownst to me as I was not even into art back then.  A happy coincidence.

Releases: Angry Blue – “The Hive” Print

This print from Angry Blue scheduled to be released tomorrow, February 9th caught my eye today. I’m a sucker for heart and hive imagery so when combined, it becomes an even stronger enticement. Then, I noticed it was letterpressed and that made it even more irresistable.  It’s priced at $30, 11 x 14″ and limited a run of 100.

Jeff Soto Hobbs & Kent Cuff Links

I’ve taken a little “break” from blogging here as I recover from knee surgery. Feeling alot better recently so thought I would get back to sharing with you guys. Unexpectedly received a box from Jeff Soto that certainly raised my spirits. One of the items inside were these cuff links from Hobbs & Kent. These are especially meaningful to me because I owned the four little “season” paintings these were based off of.

The Brothers Mario

If Cory Arcangel’s video game modifications are considered art, then this new fictitious trailer for a Mario Bros. movie built from Grand Theft Auto videoplay should also fit in the category. Machinima or Video Game Art features use of “patched or modified video games or the repurposing of existing games or game structures” for mashups or creative reworkings of familiar imagery. For those who grew up on the Nintendo franchise, this video is pretty damn cool. “Never bring a hammer to a gunfight.”

Adam Friedman

The work of Adam Friedman caught my eye today when he was featured on the My Love For You website. The details and colors he uses as he renders rock formations and geodesic shapes is pretty stunning. If you are in Oakland tonight, you might want to visit his show The Back of Beyond at FM Gallery and let me know how the paintings look in person.
